ABSTRACT

Abstract | Farmers’ local knowledge is often related to practices that help improve cultivation technology towards sustainable agriculture. Therefore, the conservation and sustainability of farmers’ local knowledge on the acceleration of banana fruiting is essential. This study explores the practices carried out by farmers to accelerate banana fruiting, improve the quality of banana yields, and the economic benefits that farmers can obtain. The qualitative research used an interpretative approach, conducted through in-depth interviews with 17 farmer participants who accelerated banana fruiting. In addition, direct observation in the field was carried out to explore farmers’ knowledge and crosscheck interview results to increase research credibility. The results showed that farmers have local knowledge of suckers cutting, flower petal peeling techniques, and cutting banana hearts to accelerate banana fruiting and improve the quality of banana yields. Applying this local knowledge led to economic benefits from selling sucker-cut seeds and increased prices due to the enhanced quality of bananas produced. Policy makers can use this local knowledge to develop innovations in banana cultivation to support food supply and economic growth in the agricultural sector for other regions, especially in the context of banana plants.
